For many forms of inshore and keelboat sailing, performance isn’t simply about maximum protection. It’s about balance. Because sailing is rarely static.   You’re constantly moving - crossing the boat, trimming, hiking, adjusting to changing conditions and changing workload throughout the day. And over time, the wrong outer layer can start working against you. Not because it isn’t waterproof enough, but because of how it affects movement, comfort and temperature regulation over long sessions. Most sailors will recognise the feeling. At the start of the day, heavier gear can feel reassuringly protective. But several hours in, that extra bulk becomes more noticeable. Movement becomes more restricted. Overheating creeps in once the workload increases. Fatigue arrives earlier than it should. And suddenly you’re thinking about your gear instead of your sailing. Each layer has a job to do, and when combined, they deliver comfort and performance in even the harshest conditions.      Think of this as your second skin. Its job is to regulate body temperature and wick moisture away, keeping you dry even when you’re working hard. Technical base layers: Soft, quick-drying fabrics prevent chills caused by sweat. Close-fitting design: Ensures no cold gaps and allows easy layering on top.   Rooster Pick: Hot Top & Leggings – the winter sailor’s secret weapon. Top tip: Skip rash vests or Lycra layers as insulation – they won’t add warmth and can actually make you feel cooler. When it comes to layering, sometimes less really is more.   This is where you add warmth. Choose pieces that are flexible, breathable, and easy to peel off when conditions change. Flexible layering: Adjust your neoprene thickness to match the forecast. When the temperature drops below 15°C, reach for your Supertherm® 4mm Top and Longjohn for maximum warmth. Research published in the British Medical Journal found that if your head is the only part of your body uncovered, you can lose around 7–10% of your body heat through it. That mid-day break can be when the cold really creeps in, leaving you feeling flat, sluggish, and unmotivated for round two. The good news? With a few smart habits, you can stay warm, recover properly, and head back out ready to perform.   Top tips for staying warm between sessions:  Layer up quickly: Throw on a warm, windproof outer layer such as our Pro Aquafleece® Rigging Coat or Aquafleece® Robe to trap heat and stop the chill setting in. Swap your kit: Take a spare pair of socks and gloves to change into during the break – dry, warm hands and feet make a huge difference. Keep moving: Light activity between sessions helps circulation and stops you from cooling down too much.     Avoid rash/lycra layers – they hold water and makes you cold. Stay flexible – pack an extra mid-layer, socks and gloves in your kit bag so you can adapt. Check your fit – layers should sit comfortably without restricting movement. Look after your gear – rinse saltwater off regularly and let items dry fully.   Final Thought: Winter sailing and training are all about preparation. The weather conditions on the Llyn Peninsula (at Pwllheli and Abersoch which is further west) can be complex but they give some of the best sailing conditions you will find.

Weather and temperature in Largs?   For the 1st week in August in 2024, the maximum daytime temperatures were 17 or 18 degrees; the wet bulk thermometer readings were a shade lower at 13 or 14 degrees. Wet bulb temperature, observations Argyll and Bute from 08/04/2024, 07:00pm | Meteologix.com The wet bulb temperature is what it’s going to feel like with wind chill in wet sailing kit, so you will need to pack some warm kit. The message is ‘bring your layers to Largs’, if we get a heatwave, you might not need them but being cold afloat is not fun. Sometimes a clear sunny day can be the one that catches us all out, as the water from spray evaporates like petrol.  That’s where the wet bulb thermometer is a good reference.  Whatever the weather when you leave the slipway in the morning, you can guarantee it won’t be the same later in the afternoon. I always take a beanie, and a neck gaiter which are easily stuffed under my buoyancy aid.  Once the wind kicks in, they are guaranteed to make you feel warmer in an instant.  Also consider an extra layer packed into a 3L dry bag with a chewy bar.  Hydration is a big factor while sailing.  Its too easy to forget to drink.  Remember that fizzy drinks will only make you pee more and will do nothing to hydrate you.    ‘Layers for Largs’ check out our Polypro tops, Hot tops and Thermaflex tops to wear underneath your trusty Aquafleece top.    Boat Preparation  Even though Russ is amazing at doing the jobs you hate;  repairing and maintaining your boat is part of your sailing apprenticeship.  Check your mainsheet and lines for wear.  Better to change them now than changing them at the regatta.  Check your universal joint for cracks.  I am not a fan of those with string in them as they tend to suffer uv damage quicker in my opinion.     Make sure your gloves are not about to wear out and will stand up to six days of hard sailing with 3 races a day, or 4 races a day in the 4.2 fleet!  Have you got a spare watch?  They do go wrong when you least want them to.  I carry a spare watch on the water in my 3L dry bag – just in case… Largs Venue Guide   I have raced at Largs with some mixed results.  I won the Radial Nationals in 2003 but lost it on a no discard, one race final, in 2006. But I recovered my composure to win the standard rig masters Europeans in 2008.  So much of what I write here is from personal experience. Race Area  Largs offers two main race areas: One is to the north of the Isle of Cumbrae, which is the principal race area; and the second is between the Isle of Cumbrae and the mainland, which is mostly used in the upper wind range.  The course to the north of Cumbae is a long sail in my experience, but it’s worth it.   The clearest wind directions are blowing from the south-to-south-west and north-to-north-west.  We did race one race South of Cumbrae when the RO was looking for wind.  It must have been a westerly.  All I can remember was the right-hand side paid.  I can’t even place the race area on the map.    North of Cumbrae (The principal race area)    Wind Direction  000 degrees:  Go left for the wind, away from the high land mass on the starboard side of the course where you will find an area of divergence - less wind velocity. There will be more breeze to the left-of-middle of the course looking upwind.   See my notes on Divergence and Convergence below:   000-040 degrees: With the wind now coming off the mainland at an angle, the left-hand side of the course pays as you go upwind on starboard tack from the starting area. You will start being headed, with lifts on port tack sailing into the shore.  Watch out for the lulls in the divergence zone near the shore.  I managed to lose the Championships in 2006 when we had a no discard 20 minute last race.  Jon Emmett won coming 12th in the last race.  We both had 4 firsts to that point in our respective qualifying races, my 25th in the last race was not so good☹  I should have gone left!  Apparently they shortened the race as the wind had shifted by 90 degrees.  Ahhh!  Thankfully we don’t have no discard races much any more.      040-130 degrees: Not a great wind direction for Largs, coming over the hills to the east. With gusts and shifts, you might want to pack your lucky dice.  Whichever direction is successful up the first beat may not pay up the next beat. Play the percentage game, keep your eyes peeled and play the shifts.      130-180 degrees: In this direction, left normally pays. There’s convergence of the wind on the port side of the course, and as you go in on starboard tack, you get headed, then lifted back out on port.    180-210 degrees: Another shifty direction, as the wind comes off the Isle of Cumbrae. Looking up wind at the island, there will be more breeze coming along its western (right hand) edge, as this is the convergence side. That means the starboard side of the course should pay for more wind.  Always check the position of the first mark relative to the breeze and topography.  There might be more wind on the right – but you may have to pass through an area of no wind to get to the mark.     210-270 degrees: With the wind in the south-west sector, it pays to go left for the wind, due to the convergence of wind coming along Cumbrae's western shoreline (more velocity). There is also a header on starboard tack as you go towards the island, with lifts on port tack sailing parallel to the northern shore of Cumbrae. Most of the 2003 Radial Nationals was from this direction.  Get a good lane to the left side.  If you are a footer (bow down) then you can afford to start towards the pin.  If you are a pincher, then perhaps you’ll need to start towards the boat to hold your lane longest.      270-000 degrees: The north-west wind direction is the most stable. But there are still some shifts - 10-15 degrees, gusty and blustery. This is another good time to keep your eyes out of the boat looking for the gusts and lulls, the gusts normally tend to lift starboard tack.  I remember the long beat to the start line in 25knots whilst sailing the Laser Standard Masters Europeans.       Tide  During maximum spring tides, the rate can get up to two knots, but don’t worry, you are on neap tides during your week.  The main flood stream runs at approximately 010 degrees in the race area north of Cumbrae. While it runs at 350 degrees through the Largs channel, which affects the eastern side of this race course. During neap tides (which is your week) the rate is down to 0.5 knot. An hour before high water the tide eases off, turning slowly over a period of one hour. Then it runs out on a bearing of 190 degrees in the mid-to-western half of the course area, and on a bearing of 170 degrees on the eastern side, down the Largs channel.   Your first day of racing the tides are:  Low Tide  00:23 AM(Sat 02 August)  1.02 m(3.35 ft)  High Tide  6:21 AM(Sat 02 August)  2.53 m(8.3 ft)  Low Tide  1:02 PM(Sat 02 August)  0.97 m(3.18 ft)  High Tide  6:54 PM(Sat 02 August)  2.4 m(7.87 ft)     Between the Isle of Cumbrae and the Mainland    I think we sailed one race in the channel during a very windy Masters Europeans.  I recall it was a bit crazy as it was coming off Cumbrae.  I think it put some of the back of the fleet off from racing anymore as it was horrible.  The sail to the northern course is long but the winds are so much steadier.    Apart from that one day, my experience in the channel is limited to one training weekend at Cumbrae, so much of this is supposition.   This race area is normally used in the upper wind range, as a safer option. The clearest wind directions are 340-000 degrees and 180-210 degrees. When from the west,  it is very gusty and shifty as the wind comes over the island of Cumbrae. From the east I am told its worse. It is very rare that you will get easterly winds at Largs, with the prevailing winds being out of the western sector. If you do, I doubt very much that the committee would race you in the Largs channel.    Wind Direction    350-010 degrees: Go left for the wind, as it is stronger on the port side of the course with the wind convergence on the left.    010-040 degrees: With the wind coming slightly off the mainland shore, you can expect to get lifts on port tack near the shore. But in gusty conditions don't get too close to the shore, because it will be lighter in there.    040-150 degrees: Shifty    150-200 degrees: On the beat go left for the wind, with convergence on the port side of the course there’s more pressure.    200-240 degrees: I would have thought that the left side looking upwind would give cleaner wind. I am sure that the current will come into play here.    240-350 degrees: In this sector, take the tack that is taking you closest to the mark. If you use a compass, also try to keep your head out of the boat to cut the circles to the mark.  Tide    In the Largs channel, the tide is squeezed through a narrow gap, stronger in the middle and weaker at the edges during both the flood and the ebb. The flood direction is predominately 000 degrees, and the ebb runs at the reciprocal 180 degrees.    Sea Breeze   The prospects of getting a good sea breeze in Largs are relatively poor, as the whole area is land locked. The best chance is when the mainland gets really warm, with no gradient wind component. Then there’s a possibility of the wind filling in from the south-west late morning or early afternoon, veering to the north-west as the day goes on.     Understanding Divergence and Convergence Wind   The basic rule: In the northern hemisphere the wind is lifted with more pressure (on starboard) over the sea and headed (on starboard) over the land (this is due to friction from trees and landmass.   When I hear a forecast describing a lifting or heading breeze, I relate that to what I experience on starboard tack.   At Largs, this can make a big difference as you will always be close to one land mass or another.  I remember this played a big part in my winning the radial nationals in a westerly breeze when sailing on the northern course.  Left towards the island was always a winner for more pressure.      Lastly – Don’t Forget Your Gear      I remember telling myself that the last thing I should do is leave my sailing boots behind.  Which was what I did!  Don’t worry, if you are like me, Largs Chandlers have everything Rooster 😊       

Summer sailing and regattas often mean long hours on the water — sometimes with three or more races back to back. If you’re new to it, or haven’t raced in a while, knowing what to wear or take with you can feel overwhelming. For the seasoned sailor, it’s often second nature — but even the most experienced can get caught out when they’re a bit rusty or just haven’t had to prep for a full championship day in a while. Even simple logistics can throw you off: can you drop a drybag on a rib? If so, great — you have more flexibility. But if you’re scrambling to find that rib between races or the next warning signal goes up right after the finish, you could be left without the gear you were counting on. Just like any endurance sport, sailing demands planning — for clothing, food, and hydration. The goal? Bring what you need without overpacking. Most dinghies don’t have room for your entire wardrobe and snack cupboard. Pack too much and it's dead weight; pack too little and, inevitably, that’s the day you needed that extra layer or snack bar. The Weather Never Makes it Easy British summer sailing is unpredictable. Sure, we all know the signs — clouds building inland, a sea breeze on the way — but forecasts rarely tell the full story. But we know that for many sailors, this can feel a little high. Fortunately, it’s easy to customise. Option 1: Trim to Your Neck Length If you want a more tailored fit, you can trim the neoprene down at the front. Here’s how: How to Trim the Neck Seal: Try It On FirstPut the smock on and assess how much material you’d like to remove for comfort. Start conservatively — it’s better to take a little off at a time. Mark the Cut LineUse a soft pencil or tailor’s chalk to draw a shallow curve at the front of the neck. Most people choose to take off a small crescent from the centre front, tapering off at the sides. Use Sharp ScissorsCut slowly and cleanly along your marked line. A sharp pair of fabric or neoprene scissors works best. Avoid jagged edges. Test and AdjustTry the smock on again. You can always take a little more off if needed — but you can’t put it back! Note: Cutting the neck will compromise the original dry-seal design slightly, but many sailors find this trade-off worth it for improved comfort in moderate conditions. Option 2: Roll the Neck Inward If you'd rather not cut the neck — or want to keep the dry-seal option for future sessions — there’s another simple trick. How to Roll the Neck for Comfort: Fold the top of the neoprene neck in on itself, so the sticky glideskin layer (which provides the dry seal) is no longer touching your skin. This results in a softer feel and slightly looser fit — ideal for warmer days or when you don’t need full waterproofing. This method gives you the flexibility to adjust the seal depending on conditions, without permanently altering the smock. At Rooster, we believe kit should work with you. We didn’t want a “pink it and shrink it” version of our men’s shorts. We wanted something that worked because it was built for women, not in spite of it. Luckily, we have the perfect team to help. Our office is full of active women — sailors, runners, climbers, rowers — all passionate about outdoor sport and technical performance. Their honest, practical feedback helped us fine-tune the cut, waistband height, dial in the leg length, and perfect the stretch and movement across sizes. When we were closer to what felt like a final product, we brought in a small focus group of female sailors and outdoor enthusiasts to test a full size set — from the smallest to the largest. These weren’t models or marketing faces — they were real women, with valuable insights. We built this group through an open call on our social media channels inviting keen sailors to give their feedback and help us refine the final design. Their feedback? Invaluable. From tweaks in the waistband construction, to how the fabric felt, to thoughts on the colourway and styling — they shaped what you now see as the final product. I am impressed with the fact that Rooster is trying to find improved fitting women’s clothing . It was interesting to be part of this process and see the effort that goes into choosing the design. - Sam Norton (part of our focus group)   Why It Took Over 3 Years In truth, launching a women’s-only technical product is a big decision for us. The market for female sailing gear is smaller, and factory minimum order quantities (MOQs) don’t always make it easy. But this project mattered, not just for the product itself, but because we know how valuable good kit is for women who are active in the sport.  Over the past decade, Rooster’s range has evolved to include female alternatives to most of our key products. When we can, we create female-specific options. And when that’s not viable, we always consider women’s fit when designing unisex products, making sure they’re as versatile and inclusive as possible.  We understand that introducing a women’s-specific short meant getting every detail right, and doing it when the brand was in a strong position to deliver it well. This isn’t just about launching a new product — it’s part of a bigger commitment. The most important aspect of a good pair of hiking shorts is positioning of the battens and the lift they provide. The options we do for hiking are: Pro Hikers  Classic hikers ¾ Pro Hikers No Pads Race Armour Lite Shorts Thermaflex Longjohns & Legs Supertherm Longjohns Pro Rash Legs Now that list might be overwhelming so here is a quick summary of the different options. A lot of the time the choice of which hiking system to go for is down to personal preference but hopefully this guide will give a bit of insight into our hikers. Pro Hikers  Full length with fixed battens, the pads tend to fit longer legged and pro sailors better. With longer legged sailors and super fit sailors, they are able to extend their legs further from the toestrap in a more comfortable manner, so they manage to get the hike pad over the side deck. My lack of ILCA training would have meant that I would have only managed to place the pro hike pad on the side deck. At 4/3mm and full length Pro hikers are ideal for cooler temperatures and winter sailing paired with hot or polypro legs. Then great by themselves all summer! Classic hikers ¾  ¾ length so just below the knee with knee reinforcements. These are also fixed pads that are slightly higher up the leg which tends to fit the less fit senior sailors and fitter younger sailors as well. A particular favourite for Topper sailors and younger sailors. Pro Hikers No Pads  Full length 4/3mm neoprene with the same construction as the standard Pro Hikers, just without the fixed pads. Compatible with our ProHike Pads so you can choose the size of pad you would like and also the position of where works best for you. I recently used them at the UK ILCA Masters Qualifier which was a brutal weekend of gusts in the area of 37 knots, although the RO thought it never reached over 27 on his committee boat (whilst holding his wind indicator under his jacket perhaps?)   Fitting the pads is easy, just turn the pro hikers inside out and place the hike pads about 3 inches from the knee seam.  The top of the hike pads are shaped to protect your delicate parts. The top of the hikers ended up being well into my bum cheeks.   I was not embarrassed as I can still remember seeing Paige Railey (World #1 Radial Sailor),waddling like a Penguin whilst walking on the shore.  Our Prohike pads are pre shaped to your leg, which gives you additional lift off the side deck.  This gives the sailor the ability to sail the boat much flatter without hitting the water, which is fast!   For me it also makes for a slightly nicer hiking position - gives my legs a slight bend, which having not sailed the ILCA much this year was a godsend. Having fitted the pads to where felt best, the pads were central to the deck edge, and I was in the lap of luxury.   Race Armour Lite Shorts  Our most versatile option, these neoprene and spandex shorts have the capability to add Prohike pads into the seat through our standard hook and loop attachment. These shorts can then be worn by themselves for summer sailing or over the top of any other wetsuit or drysuit. At the ILCA Qualifier my wife Sarah wore the shorts over her Supertherm Longjohn which she thought was a game changer. They never dropped or moved. Happy wife is a happy life! LongJohns and Legs Similar to the shorts, our longjohns and legs are compatible with the Prohike pads. Get yourself ready for the season by making sure you have a buoyancy aid that is the right fit for you and ensures you are comfortable on the water. Here is some of our best advice when it comes to buoyancy aids. Does it fit properly? Your buoyancy aid should be snug to your body when fully tightened. If you can't get it close to your body through tightening the straps then it is probably too large. Your buoyancy aid, adjustable or not, shouldn't rise up to your mouth/ears when pulled up as otherwise it will do this when you're in the water, making swimming difficult. Is it still safe? Your buoyancy aid should be certified for your weight and without any obvious signs of reduced buoyancy. Conduct a basic visual inspection to check all the obvious things: That the foam has not clearly deteriorated Make sure that there are no rips or tears that will affect its performance If there are any buckles, check they are all still working If you want to check the buoyancy of a CE certified buoyancy aid there is a simple test you can perform to make sure it is still safe* Check it out here: *Rooster takes no responsibility for inaccuracies during your own test. It’s that time of year when the winds get crisper, the water turns colder and the seasoned watersports enthusiasts prepare to stay warm so they can continue to enjoy their time on the water. From team to Rooster riders, we’ve found some great tips to keep you toasty this season. Tip 1: Layers, layers, layers Layering is key, we recommend in the winter a thermal base layer : Either PolyPro™ or Hot Stuff and depending on how cold you get can be worn as a combination with the top, leggings, socks and glove liners. Next up is Neoprene, we firmly believe in the wetsuit layering system where you have a longjohn and top - if you combine our thickest range you get 8mm thickness on your core then 4mm on your arms and legs where you need to move. The cherry on top of your Rooster layering is then an Aquafleece® spray top, these come in a large variety of styles, thickness and colours so the choice is really up to you, and how you feel the cold on the water. For the full layering guide click here Tip 2: Look after your extremities We all know you lose the most heat out of your head, hands and feet - so why not look after them and keep them as warm as possible! For your hands wear both a glove liner (Hot or PolyPro™) plus a normal grip glove over the top. On your feet you can wear a combination of socks from the liners (again Hot or PolyPro™) with the wetsuit socks over the top that come in a 2.5mm thickness or a 4mm thickness. Lastly your head, it's pretty obvious but many people forget about it, so put a beanie on either a wetsuit one, a merino wool beanie, or a waterproof fleece beanie. Other accessories such as the neck gaiter and headband can also help keep those important parts of your body warm. Tip 3: Take a warm drink onboard Invest in a flask or chilly bottle that keeps drinks warm on the go. There’s not much that beats a hot drink on an icy day. It will help you heat up but also give you a bit of a morale boost when it's one of those really cold days. Tip 4: Stay active when you’re on the water The sea might be calm,  but that doesn’t mean you have to be. Regular moving on your boat / board will generate body heat, keeping you warm and making sure your muscles are ready for any movement. A great trick if you’ve lost the feeling in your hands is to do this movement to get the blood flowing back into your hands. It’s simple yet an effective way to tackle numbness in your fingers! Tip 5: The sock strategy Put your socks on before your wetsuit or longjohn which can save the struggle of getting a thicker wetsuit on over your feet. Also ensure your base layer leggings are tucked inside of your sock so these do not ride up when you pull your wetsuit on. Another good trick with socks is if you are using them for consecutive days and you haven’t managed to fully dry them, then turn them inside out so you have a dry inside sock. We hope that armed with these invaluable tips you can embrace the changing weather with open arms and know that you are prepared to be snug and warm whatever the Autumn seas might throw at you. It’s inevitable…the seasons are changing. Summer is pretty much over and Autumn/Fall are very much on the way. Do not fear, you can continue to enjoy the water sailing, supping, winging, kayaking with just a few key changes to your kit bag. Check out below the best ways to keep your gear going through the seasons. Base Layers Swap this:  For that:  Changing your base layers can have a massive effect on your warmth on the water. Our PolyPro layers are a great choice that can be used throughout Autumn and Winter with more layers, but can also be used by themselves as a layer during Spring and Summer. If you’re planning on continuing to go on the water through the depths of Winter, or you just get very cold then the Hot Stuff range will be more suited to layering with your current wetsuits.   Spray Tops Swap this: For that:  The Lightweight Spray Top is a brilliant option for the warmer months, when you’re still going to get splashed but the water and air temperature aren’t too cool. A lot of the time it is personal preference, so here are a few key differences between the two. The Rash Top has a tighter fit, feeling more like a second skin and better suited for “wetter” watersports such as dinghy sailing, surfing, wingfoiling and more. The Rash Top is also better for cooling you down when the top gets wet as it spreads the water around your body, so ideal in very hot climates. From a first glance, you may not notice too much difference between our Aquafleece® Robe and the Aquafleece® Rigging Jacket. And that’s totally understandable, after all they’re made from the same iconic Aquafleece® material, are available in the same colourways and just look like two long coats. But we’ve been listening to our customers as we’ve been meeting them at shows in the UK this year, and we feel as though they deserve a comparison spotlight so you can make the right choice. Similar they may seem, but let’s take a closer look at what makes these two coats completely different, and find out which one is the best match for you and your lifestyle. We’ll compare the fit, the price and the technical features and function of the two to help you decide. Size Getting the right size for your equipment and gear is essential for experiencing the ultimate enjoyment from your day. Learning the difference between the sizing options of our Aquafleece® Robe and Aquafleece® Rigging Jacket could be the difference between why you purchase one from the other. Robe: One size fits all (Junior available). This gives everyone room to have the option to use the robe as a changing tool. Wear the robe over your wetsuit, zip yourself in and remove your arms to comfortably get changed wherever you need. Adjust the cuffs to suit your arm length when worn as normal. Rigging Jacket: Comes in sizes; Junior, XS/S, M/L, XL/XXL and XXXL/XXXXL and is designed to be ever so slightly oversized, so you can fit your buoyancy aid under when transitioning from rigging to sailing. If you’re looking for more of a day-to-day style, this one might be a better option for you. The Rigging Jacket should come to your mid-thigh and the adjustable cuffs allow you to tailor the wrists to your arm length. Length & Shape We’ve thought very carefully into the shapes of our Aquafleece® Robe and our Aquafleece® Rigging Jacket. Their unique functions and uses mean the lengths are slightly different and here’s why. Robe: The ‘one-size for all’ fit means the robe is much longer in the body than the Rigging Jacket. The robe will come to your mid-calf, or your ankle at the very most. The length is designed to allow you to feel comfortable getting changed, and for keeping the elements off from your whole body after you have been fully submerged in the water. The Aquafleece® outer shell will keep the wind off you whilst getting changed too. Rigging Jacket: The coat should come to your mid-thigh at the front, and it has been designed with a lower tiered back to protect you and your clothing from wet surfaces when you sit down or lean. The longer back also allows for rain and spray to run away from your core, keeping you warm and dry for the rest of the day. Lining It’s the inside that counts the most, and that is certainly true if you’re comparing these two garments. It’s the lining of these coats that truly set them apart in design and purpose, and ultimately complete preference to the customer. Robe: The robe includes a fleece terry lining, which is fully removable. The lining is extremely warm and cosy in very cold weather and exposed elements, but acts double as a soft towelling material to dry you as you change. The lining can be removed completely, including the arms and hood, to allow you to wash the inside of your jacket, so you can freshen up your robe for your next adventure. This is the first changing robe on the market to have this ability. Rigging Jacket: Like our other Aquafleece® range, the Rigging Jacket has a soft and smooth ‘short’ fleece lining throughout, including the pockets. This makes the jacket more lightweight, but with the Aquafleece® windproof shell, this is still a great option for you if you’re prone to feeling the cold, but manoeuvrability is required.  Hoods Not the most obvious comparison to make on coats, especially when made by the same manufacturer, but the hood could be the reason you pick one coat over the other if you’re looking at costs and technicality. Robe: The robe has a spacious hood. Just like the rest of the robe lining, the inside of the hood has a terry lining to aid drying your head and hair. The hood has a soft Aquafleece® shell which keeps the wind off your head. Rigging Jacket: The hood of the rigging jacket is much more structured than the robe, and includes a peaked cap to protect your face from elements such as rain and spray or as a block shield from the sun.* The Rigging Jacket also has a reflective patch on the top of the hood, which is visible when you wear it down, a great safety feature for off-shore sailing and walking in low visibility.  Cost Comparing the cost between the two is an important part of piecing together the aesthetically set apart differences. The features listed indicate that the Rigging Jacket is in fact a more technical product and this is reflected fairly in the price point. Robe: £165 A competitive price for a high tech changing robe, the first on the market with the ability to remove the lining for the purpose of keeping your robe hygienic. The Aquafleece® material has a Polyurethane coating on the outside for water resistance, durability and flexibility. The Aquafleece® Robe being our largest Aquafleece® product, you would assume that it would be the most expensive in the range.  Rigging Jacket: £172.50 The Rigging Jacket price attracts plenty of questions when we compare the two coats. If the Rigging Jacket is smaller in size and length, then why does it cost more over the heavier and larger Robe? The Rigging Jacket may have lighter properties at first glance, but when we take a closer look at the structured hood, this explains the slight price increase as the hood is much more technical than the Aquafleece® Robe’s.  Use Depending on what it is you’re most likely to be doing, taking a closer look at how these coats were designed to serve the customer, the ergonomics that have gone into the process are fit for purpose. But depending on what that purpose is will be the decider.  Robe: Primarily designed for the on-the-go, quick changing, watersports mad individual, the concept of the changing robe has stretched beyond the boat park in the UK. Customers are tending to use them for day-to-day errands such as commuting, walking the dog and even going to the shops. It’s hardly a surprise whilst our winters seem to get colder every year. The robe was created to give the option to change in the most convenient way, and giving the ability to wash this after use, but you can use it how you wish! Rigging Jacket: Rigging by name, rigging by nature. The rigging jacket was created to keep you warm and dry whilst you get ready for your day out on the water. It's also perfect for coaches out on the rib all day long. Being on and around the water can be a lot of fun, but when it comes to kit maintenance, this might be the last thing you want to do after a challenging day on the water yet is essential for the sustainability of your kit. That's why we've put together some of our best advice for you and your kit. - Rinse your kit immediately when you get home, especially if you've been in salt water - a great way to do this is to dunk it in the bath or a large flexi bucket. - Hang it up properly like this: - Take care to rinse any zippers to make sure there's no sand, grit or salt stuck in them. - Re-proof any items that have DWR treatments to ensure they stay waterproof. We found drying boots upside down makes a huge difference to the drying speed, so why don't you try this. What you need: 1x old broom, 1x old plank, 1x drill bit & 1x little bit of wood glue Get an old broom stick and cut into 30cm sections. Take a plank and measure out how many boots you want to be able to dry, I suggest 10-15cm gaps between the holes which you drill to be able to put the pieces of broom handle in. Apply some wood glue to the holes, stick in your pieces of handle and, hey presto you're all set. Happy sailing (and toasty toes)" Emma @em_hivey - RS 200 sailor "A quick rinse and hanging it straight up gives you the best chance of dry kit the next day, but also reduces the risk of your wetsuit rubbing or getting a rash at the knee/elbow creases. I now take some coat hangers, pegs and a cheap mini camping rotary line to events as it works well to quickly dry your kit without the faff of trying to find somewhere to dry it" Tadeo @tadeo.funess - 29er sailor "Avoid folding it or leaving it rolled up for long periods of time, as this can damage the neoprene and leave permanent wrinkles. Avoid wearing jewellery or other objects that could scratch or tear the materials of your kit and try to avoid chlorine as this can be damaging to neoprene and other materials, if it does then wash as soon as possible." Issy @issyglazebrooksailing - ILCA sailor "Drying my kit on my C-monsta hanger has been a game changer, coupled with washing it with Halo, which means it can be washed on a lower temperature, which is turn saves energy and helps care for the environment" But what happens when washing and rinsing your kit isn't enough? Another way to extend the life of your kit, just when you think it's on the brink, is through repairing it. If you've got a small tear in your Aquafleece® or neoprene wetsuit we sell repair kits for both. This means you can bring your item of clothing back to life without having to buy a new one especially when you just have a minor tear. Larger tears may require some hand sewing or using a sewing machine - we would recommend keeping some swatches from old wetsuits for back up in case you need to patch up your current one. If sewing is not your forte and you find yourself in a situation with a wetsuit with larger tears / holes, checkout Revive - by Rooster, our new repair service to help increase the lifespan of your wetsuits, clothing, sails and boat bags. Prevention is always the best cure which is why we would always advise on the correct care for your clothing from day dot. There are some easy wins to be had, for example investing in a pair of Wear Protection shorts to wear over your wetsuit in a dinghy can be a great way to protect the seat of your wetsuit from any damage, especially if you are prone to rubbing around the deck (or sail in a hiking boat!) Tuning Guide By Steve Cockerill With the possibility of sailors well in excess of 90kg sailing the Rooster 8.1, we have built in a large amount of luff curve the sail to support the leach – even when the mast is bending sideways under the full hiking load of the sailor. This means that the rig has to be set up differently to the Laser® Standard Rig sail that perhaps you may be more used to. If you were to merely use the equivalent vang (kicker) tensions of Laser® Standard Rig sail you would immediately notice, on an off-wind leg, that the luff of the sail is over-full and the shape of the sail is not balanced. This guide has been written to help you get the most out of your Rooster 8.1 Rig. Pre sailing tips If you are using the glass fibre sleeve in conjunction with a Laser® Standard Rig lower mast you will need to pack out the inner sleeve with tape to ensure a good interference fit with the lower mast and to pack out the joint of the upper mast to ensure a good fit in the extender tube. If you don’t ensure a good interference fit for both you may find your leach tension reduced which will reduce your pointing ability. Upwind 0-6 knots Kicker tension should be block-to-block or more (the term block-to-block means sheet the mainsheet blocks together and pull the slack out of the kicker) You may have to use some Cunningham to help open the top of the sail (take a look at your tell tails) you may also find that with a new sail you have some luff curve creases that are there due to the luff curve of the sail not matching the oddities of different spar bends – with more use the sail cloth will get a little softer and accommodate these differences. Use of the Cunningham will also take these creases out. I flatten the Outhaul to reduce the drag and try to match the depth in the head of the sail. Perhaps only hand width depth in the bottom of the sail. In the picture perhaps only 3-4 knots I have used lots of Vang to flatten the luff of the sail and used some Cunningham to unlock the upper leach and take out some luff to clew creases. Upwind 7-12 knots The Vang tension needs to be increased with wind strength however, depending on your weight, you may be able to sail with less Vang tension at some point in the increasing wind. Personally at around 77kg there is no point for me where I need more power as I am on the light side for the rig. Therefore I go from underpowered and using Vang to unlock the sail to overpowered and needing Vang to de-power the sail very quickly. Again I flatten the sail in the base as I am not looking for power from depth as there is plenty of sail area, so I tend again to leave the foot at about hand width. The picture shows no vang tension in 8 knots. Upwind 12-20 knots Again for me I am seriously overpowered and use immense Cunningham tension to windward Speaking to the heavier sailors who are sailing the boat well, the same is true. They have commented to me that the sail still needs a little wearing-in to get the best out of it, but they think that it is because there is less resistance to the use of Cunningham. Again Vang is used heavily and as a light person, I think I use more than the heavier sailors, but I am lucky that I am also quite agile as the increased Vang tension makes it hard to get under the boom! Heavier sailors are inclined to use less vang to de-power which at the same time gives the sailors more room to cross the boat. I think if you are new to Laser® style sailing, you might find the amount of Vang tension impedes your movement around the boat. Laser® sailors are often aware of easing the vang tension to tack in strong breezes. Control the foot of the sail with Outhaul tension to keep it as flat as possible without restricting the use of the Cunningham. Always get the Cunningham on first and pull the Outhaul on afterwards. Upwind above 20 knots You are looking for a challenge! Play the sheet constantly! I am not sure that there is a survival technique to employ. In the Standard Rig Laser® you might release the vang tension completely in over 35 knots in order to make good to windward so maybe this is worth a try. I also suggest you don’t ease the Outhaul! Update from Steve, February 2009: At the Nationals Last year on the windy second day I decided to use as much Cunningham as I could put on. I used the old style both legs pull with straight arms. I figured that either the sail would break – or I would be able to sail fast against Greg Carey who is a big unit. It worked!! No I mean I was very very competitive. The mast bent on its own – a bit like a windsurfer rig – and I sailed to windward with no kicker – but with the sail block to block. It was so easy! I beat Greg to the first mark and the rest is history. Downwind 2-6 knots As the introduction explains, we have a lot of fullness by the luff of the sail to distribute across the sail profile so use plenty of Vang tension. You will find that easing the Vang will not make the leach open any more or increase the flow over the sail, which is different to the Laser® Standard Rig in which you would ease the vang lots on a run. Use the red camber line to give you a clear indication of the fullness across the sail. In this picture I am able to run by the lee despite the lack of wind and with lots of vang, as the increased vang makes the flow attach to the sail. If you understand calibrations better, I use 75mm (approx 3″) more tension (measuring the 75mm as a distance the double block and becket on a 15:1 Vang has travelled away from the boom key block) than I would have used in similar conditions with a Laser® Standard Rig. I release the Cunningham and tend to keep the Outhaul quite tight, perhaps eased a little only as I tend to think of projected area rather than depth. Downwind 7-12 knots Not much change to the above. Perhaps you can ease the Outhaul and Vang a little on a deep reaching run as the fullness should move with the wind flow. Downwind over 13 knots Downwind 13 knots and above – hang on and enjoy the ride! The helm should be relatively easy as the rig is well over the bow reducing any weather helm but sit well back. Reaching 4-8 knots Your problem will be to unlock the upper leach. In this shot you can see that many of the boats still have plenty of Vang tension and no Cunningham tension Reaching in Over 12 knots You might want to hang onto the Cunningham as you go off wind to keep the fullness forward and avoid too much weather helm. Originally launched in 2019, this jacket has been an all-time favourite amongst the team at Rooster HQ, as well as our community on and off the water. So much so, we’ve decided to restock it into our core collection moving into the 2023 season. With so much disruption over the last few years with the pandemic unexpectedly hitting us all hard, with the offset hugely effecting the clothing and production industry, it has become more and more apparent to make sustainable choices, not only in the development process but also in the consideration of if we are to keep a product in the collection. This one wasn’t plain sailing (excuse the pun), even though there is a lot of demand, our main priority is always to try to make sure that we have enough neoprene in stock to feed our community. Often the tech casual range ends up taking the hit when priorities have to be considered.  Whenever we do reintroduce a product, we always make sure to make little tweaks to ensure that the product can be the best it can. Often these go unnoticed by the innocent eye, but we know about them. The reason we blend the updates into the current models is so that we can support our dealer/distributor network and limit the consequence of leaving them with a load of ‘old’ stock, with too much product on the market. We’re not a fast fashion brand, so our motto is to only replace when necessary.  Back to the reason you probably headed to this blog - to find out about the development of the Superlite Hybrid jacket. Well here you go: The design team at Rooster are on the constant hunt for the best materials to be used on our products, with considerations into durability, performance, environmental impact, source-ability, end of use, lifecycle, all with the overshadowing reason for sustainability. Sustainability is such a broad term with so many factors dialling into the term.  Can you ever make a fully ‘sustainable’ product? I will leave this question open.  So, after the decision to reintroduce this jacket, the team looked at all the feedback we have had on the previous version, personally and from customers. This particular product was not hard to gather feedback, as I mentioned earlier, it is widely worn by the team. And although the original version was a sturdy and great jacket, we felt that there were some small improvements that could be made to make it functionally even better. Used mainly for active wear, and when doing sports, the jacket now benefits from some extra space around the shoulders so that it can move with you better. As a sailing brand, where many of our community actively partake in other sports like swimming, climbing, and rowing, the lat-gain* can be a real problem. Our latest update to the fit will go a long way for functionality.  As part of our general love and mindfulness for our playground (aka the planet), we also try to, where possible, use recycled fabrics or low impact fabrics. We know this is not the complete answer to solving climate change, but in a field where technical garments are still hugely reliant on manmade ‘plastic’ products for performance, we feel like moving away from ‘virgin’ fabrics, will at least help in the process. Enter the recycled fabrics used on the jacket, with the addition of recycled filling/padding and a slight increase in thickness to give that extra bit of insulation.  The final improvement that we made was to change to a ripstop recycled nylon for the outer shell fabric, as with any jacket of this nature they can be susceptible to snagging. The ripstop outer will prolong the durability of the product, meaning it should last longer and be stronger – we’ve tried to take the worry away from you that you might damage your jacket so you can get on with enjoying it – whether that be on a hike, sailing around the coast or whilst tinkering with your boat on the shore. * large latissimus dorsi back muscles due to working out or partaking in certain sports.  

As the leaves turn to orange and the autumn night start to draw an early close, our number one question at Rooster’s Customer Service is which Aquafleece do I go for?  There is no simple definitive answer to this question, but the following guidance should help you choose what’s best for you.    For the Occasional Watersports Partaker:  Someone who maybe only sails a few times or doesn’t want to spend too much on a super technical bit of gear, the Classic Aquafleece Top is your friend. It’s still made with the same great all-round Aquafleece material and with a simple panel layout and overlock stitching construction, should provide enough protection from the elements on cooler days. If you’re buying for a child that’s in a growth spurt and eating, you out of house and home – we’d recommend this version too as it’s designed slightly longer in the body than the Pro Lite or Pro.   “I sail all year” except if I have the break the ice off the cover first…  Pro Lite Aquafleece Top is for you. This uses the same material and stitching as the Classic but has adjustment at the cuffs and wait band to help keep water out and the warm in. It is by far, our most popular model and comes in a range of colours as well as a ladies fit. If you’re not sure what to go for, it’s probably this one(!)    “I’m a self-confessed nutter. I’m on the water all year round – the colder the better!”  Pro Aquafleece Top is for you, particularly in the winter. (Although you may want to switch it out for a lightweight top for summer). Pro Aquafleece fabric is the thickest in this range and has taped seems so that no cold water will get through where the panels are stitched together. If you’re a cold bod, this single top with take you through autumn to spring and is likely to transform your winter sailing.   For the All-Weather Outdoor Protection in a Jacket  Ideal for rigging up in the rain, hiking through the mountains in a storm or just popping up to the shop in torrential rain, the Pro Aquafleece Rigging Jacket is for you. The initial design idea was to build a jacket capable of going on top of all your gear to protect you from those days when it’s probably warmer to rig up already in your wetsuit. It is over sized, comes down to the just above the knee and has double sleeve cuffs as well as a mid-height collar and waterproof zip to really keep all the drips out. Just like the Pro Aquafleece top, this coat is made with the same thicker fleece and taped seams but its less sailing specific design opens it up to a variety of sport and activities.  The Ultimate Cool Crossover  The Aquafleece Hoodie could be considered our most exciting Aquafleece yet. The normal hoodie style you would expect, crossed with the Classic or Pro Lite Aquafleece materials gives any watersports lover the option to use one garment for Paddle Boarding up the river or sitting on the rail of a yacht and then heading straight to the pub or nipping into the supermarket for some lunch and not looking out of place. It’s been a great hit with dog walkers, requiring a more wind protection than a normal jumper and also sailing instructors spending all day on and off the water.    For the Multi-Sport Athlete  The Active Aquafleece is your friend, designed with a slimmer, yet more flexible fit, with additional panels added at the back of the shoulders for unlimited movement. The large front zip down to the chest allows for great ventilation, where this top can be used for nearly any sport. It is not completely waterproof (although the fabric itself is waterproof) as the seams are not taped, but this does allow for extra breathability. It uses the same seam construction as the Classic, Pro Lite and Hoodie Aquafleece styles. The Rooster team have tested it for running, cycling and sailing (of course) and it’s been a real hit!    For the Instant Warm Hug: Aquafleece Robe Our newest iteration of the Aquafleece is so new, it’s not yet on the shelf. The Aquafleece 2 in 1 Robe is an all cocooning hooded gown to wrap you up and keep you protected from the outside elements. Ideal for post swim or watching from the side-lines, this has got to be the thickest, warmest and cosiest application of Aquafleece yet. What’s the difference? Why are there two types of base layer now? They may look very similar on the rail but they are quite different garments, using different technologies for different user applications. Both available in Mens, Womens and Junior fit, for tops, bottoms, gloves, socks and other accessories. Our universally adored PolyPro is a very warm hydrophobic base layer with a brushed fleece inner surface. It’s super soft and lightweight so can be used for a variety of sports, anytime you need to keep the retain warmth. Skiing, cycling, sailing, surfing and in the gym, this versatile material, seemingly very similar to any thermal but cleverly moisture wicking on the inside and hydrophobic on the outside, due to the natural properties of Polypropylene. Hot Stuff is a very thin neoprene (0.5mm) with a titanium layer bonded on the inside to reflect the heat back in. In our new design tops and bottoms, tested by swimmers, sailors and coastal rowers, we have used PolyPro panelling to give an unlimited stretch for watersports such as rowing and kayaking where mobility is a must. The Hot Stuff range is more suited to the “wetter” watersports, rather than your land sports such as cycling and running as the titanium layer with neoprene can be too good at retaining warmth and end up quite sweaty! Still not sure what to go for? If you’re after a normal base layer to use across different sports, including under wetsuit, go for PolyPro. If you’re after a depths of winter addition to your neoprene, or an alternative to a 2mm neoprene top, without the bulk, the Hot Top is the one to go for.
