Description

Arguably the strongest tiller on the market utilising space age technology.

Manufactured on a mandrill with pre-preg materials to produce the most consolidated carbon fibres ever! Each tiller is additionally wound with 45 degree twill to improve the tillers hoop strength and make it bash and crush resistant.

Fitted with a stainless steel plate to prevent traveller wear, and a cleat to allow easy and efficient use of a rudder pull down rope. The side cleat fitted is a CLAMCLEAT CL277AN RACING MICRO CLEAT

Tiller Types

There are TWO tiller type/styles available, either the standard profile or the low profile style.

The Standard type tiller is for the Laser hull built in the UK and Europe by Performance Sailcraft Europe from 1969 to March 2019. The current 'Laser' is built by Laser Performance.

Low profile type tiller is for the Australian built Lasers, the ILCA Ovington boat (UK March 2019 onwards) and the Devoti ILCA (EU) builders.

NOTE: A small 3mm circular mark can be found on the tiller head (underneath) to denote the Low Profile version - see below image: (Also main product image 5 showing the 2 tillers, the left tiller shows also the small circular mark)

Please select the type of tiller required from the above drop down menu.  If you need further advise please do not hesitate to contact Rooster customer services on +44 (0) 1243 389997

Tiller properties

Material Carbon Fibre
Overall Length 970 mm
x-section width 29.1 mm
x-section depth 16.4 mm

"Once upon a time long before the ILCA, there were lasers produced by Laser Performance Australia that had more of a release angle on the transom.  Despite the rules controlling the angle of the blade in the rudder stock, this increased released angle made the rudder more vertical. This also made tillers sit up higher over the traveller cleat. We then reduced the angle of the tiller head and thus was born the Aussie version of our world famous tiller.  If you used one on a UK Laser - the Aussie tiller would hit the cleat and was not  nice.   At the same time Lasers in the UK, Europe and the USA, had less of a release angle and our normal tiller was made for them.  Giving them the best clearance over the cleat for windy wave sailing.

Since the ILCA was born we can now assume that ILCA moulds were taken from the original Australian builder so our normal tiller now might appear too high.  Now the nature of our tiller head means you can re profile the shape with a file and some fettling.  However, if you are confident that you have an ILCA taken from an Aussie hull mould, and your gudgeons are not warn out - then the ILCA version of the tiller is what you want".   Steve Cockerill

The RWO trap fitting used on this tiller is affixed to the carbon with 2 no. CARBON RIVETS  4.8mm dia. x 14mm long. See product SKU 133903

Broke after 3 years of mild use

I bought the plate version 3 years ago and was quite happy with it. Recently whilst out sailing the steel plate fell off however and when I got back in, I noticed that the tiller is now broken where the plate used to be. I presume this happens easily once the protective plate is missing but considering this, I would've hoped it to be more securely fixed to the tiller. The glue doesn't seem to last too long. I should point out that I've sailed less than approximately once a week over the three years that I've had it

    Good tiller

It is stiffer in the vertical plane than the carbon tiller that came with the boat. I bought this as part of a program to eliminate play in the steering system. Turns out the rubbish gudgeons that are class standard were the main culprit. I had a Laser back in the late 70’s that had stainless gudgeons and there was never any play in the steering. Planned obsolescence, I suppose. I did need to change the universal to Ronstan to avoid replacing the extension. That was way more work than anticipated. Maybe going forward you could offer the option of a different uni?
