Wind, Rain & Broken Kickers, by Monique Vennis-Ozanne

By Rooster Sailing 2nd October 2020

The first Topper National Series of 2017-18 took place in Poole Harbour on a sunny Saturday morning, hanging around with my friends and my brother Ollie. After an hour postponement, due to light wind, we finally launched. The lack of wind left us drifting around Poole Harbour. Our race officer, Peter Saxton, started a race in about 5 knots. In this race I battled for 5th at the windward mark, playing the shifts upwind, however the race was abandoned after a dramatic wind shift and lack of wind. During our wait for the course to be re-layed a squall hit Poole Harbour bringing wind and heavy rain! During the wait for the next start I was kept warm by my Thermaflex Top. The wind then died off completely and we didn't get any further races in. 21586541_10156619429882589_4022482392975527964_oOn Sunday, Poole provided us with wind of about 8-12 knots. In Race 1 I got a respectful 8th in shifty conditions after a black flag general recall. Race 2 I rounded the windward mark in 5th and when I returned to the windward mark I was in 3rd close behind Toby Pearce and fellow Rooster sailor Sonia Evans. By the next mark I had gained myself an overlap on Toby who had an overlap on Sonia, so I rounded the mark on the inside. I controlled my lead downwind and won! After taking a bullet I came 21st in the next race after a not-so-great start. The last race of the day I had a brilliant committee boat start and rounded the windward mark in 5th. Unfortunately, when I released my kicker, the shackle at the bottom broke so I had no kicker and I had also left my spare kicker on the rib. I had a choice, I could either luff up and try to fix it (which would mean I lose my position) or carry on and make it work. The rest of the race I sailed with no kicker at all, which was quite sketchy when a gust came downwind. I managed to finish in 6th place very close to 4th. I finished 7th overall and 2nd female. Well done to fellow Rooster sailor Sonia Evans!
