Team Racing- Oxford and Berlin

By Matt Beck 2nd October 2020

Just had a couple of weekends of Team Racing, the first being the Eric Twiname Team Racing Championships held at Farmoor near Oxford. Then the Opti Team Cup, which was held at Potsdamer Yacht Club, Berlin.

For the ET champs we were racing in RS Feva's, which was good fun because I had not raced or sailed in a Feva for over a year! Our team was made up of current Optimist sailors; myself, William Heathcote, Drew Wright, Henry Chandler, Ellen Main and Hannah Roberts-Straw – otherwise known as “The Sailing Assassins”.

At the end of the round robin stage we’d won 15 from 17 races so qualified for the Gold A fleet, which was made up of the top 5 teams. Going into stage 2 we were growing in confidence, but knew the races against at least two of the other teams would be really tough. We were really pleased to win 4 from 4 of our races, which meant we were the overall winners of the Junior fleet.

After the ET’s I headed out to Berlin with the GBR team for the 28th Opti Team Cup. The other sailors in the team were my friends Drew Wright, Julia Mellers and Cossie Lewis. Our coach for the event was Tom Mallindine.

The standard at the event was really high so we definitely felt things were fairly tough during the first few races – whilst we’ve fleet raced and trained together lots, this was the first time we’d raced as a four boat team!

During the course of the round robin phase our results improved. In the end we finished 11th overall, but having the opportunity to attend this long running event was a great experience. Thanks to Tom, who was a great coach for the event.
