Stokes Bay Feva Grand Prix

By Louis Wright 30th September 2020

After a disastrous time yesterday with a snapped shroud, we were aiming to get all top twenty races today.

In race 1 we had a good start and were coming around 15th, the 10 knot wind meant we were hiked and powered up. Off the line we were being covered so we tacked off into clean air. We rounded the windward mark around 20th. We struggled a bit to hoist the spinnaker on the reach. We decided to go left downwind and managed to gain 3 places coming 17th in that race.

In race 2 we had a decent start and were coming mid fleet, we struggled a bit to keep our speed upwind and throughout the tacks. When we were on the lay-line three boats tacked and gave us their dirty air. Our hoists were much better in this race. We held our position down wind and rounded the leeward mark 20th, but we went up the wrong side of the beat and managed to only lose two places so we rounded the windward mark in 22nd. We kept our place and finished the race in 22nd.

In race 3 we had a good start but unfortunately we ended up sailing into a big bundle of boats on the pin end so we had to tack off and duck 7 boats this was very annoying because it put us into 26th. We rounded the windward mark and did a good hoist, we rounded the leeward mark in the same position. The next beat we caught up to 24th But down wind we took a risk and banged the left corner, it paid off and we finished that race 17th.

Overall we enjoyed the weekend and it was good practice for the Feva Worlds in Carnac which is in three weeks time.
