Q&A: Lifting the lid on 'top of the fleet' High Performance 30, Pegasus DekMarx

By Emma Ralph 2nd October 2020
With Rooster’s evolution in inshore racing looming, we got the inside scoop on brand ambassadors Pegasus DekMarx, a Farr30 team of determined sailors that have gone from strength to strength, winning their class in the North Sails May Regatta and, most recently, the HP30 class in the RORC Vice Admiral’s Cup. The HP30 is a rapidly growing class due to its lightweight, fast and exciting boats. Pegasus DekMarx is Malcolm Wootton's modified passion project, supported by a partnership with Rooster as the team put new and existing products through their paces. We caught up with Wootton following his recent win… What is the origin of the boat name, Pegasus? “It's a reference to the mythical winged horse. We chose the boat as a long term development project to try new things in yacht racing. We've made many changes but hopefully we will eventually provide her with wings and help her fly across the water.” What first attracted you to the HP30 Class and to the Farr30? “We were looking for a relatively unrestricted, fast class of racing boats, not too big because we like to race with a close-knit group of good sailors - no passengers or people as moveable ballasts. Bearing in mind our development objectives, both class and boat fitted the bill. However, Pegasus is over 20 years old so has required a great deal of restoration work as well as the planned performance improvements.” How did you come to meet David Thomas (Pegasus DekMarx Boat Captain)? Do you always agree on the racecourse? “I met David through a friend of a friend who knew we'd been let down by a crew member at short notice, just before the 2016 Round the Island race. David came on board and he's still here! Most of the modifications have evolved out of our combined ideas and discussions. We debate vociferously but usually end up agreeing by working towards the best answer. On the race course we rarely disagree - mostly it's an on-going discussion about what's best to do next, based on what we can see and feel.” To date, what has been your favourite regatta and why? “I guess it would be winning our class at Cowes Week 2016 (HP30) plus the overall Sportsboat class with 5 firsts and a second place scoring. We also won the best Newcomer award (It was my first Cowes Week).” If you could modify the boat in any way, money being no object, what would you do? “New, more modern, stiffer, lighter mast, ditto keel and rudder. We would also implement our ideas of lateral foils to make the boat much faster.” Tell us more about DekMarx/Motocomp… “Moto Comp is a company I founded in 2011 and it mostly does design work in the motorcycle industry for a couple of the world's biggest motorcycle manufacturers. "Since 2016 we have been developing a range of products for the marine/sailing sector based on some technologies we have developed in the motorcycle industry. These carry the brand "DekMarx" and the new website should go live in the next month.” What do you hope to see in the future for the Pegasus DekMarx Team? “More high profile regattas, such as the ORC/IRC World Championships. We also want to prove that she can be competitive in mixed handicap racing, not just within the relatively narrow band of HP30. But we have an important series of regattas to win in HP30 first ;-)”

So far this season Pegasus DekMarx have been utilising the Pro Lite Aquafleece to keep the spray off, as well as the Diamond Overhead Buoyancy Aid, this is then held close to the body by the Signal Blue Race Bib. One of the key factors for the Race Bib, an unorthodox choice for Sportsboat sailing, was to prevent any kind of catching on the rail or other snagging and to decrease bulk so that movements are swift, comfortable and unrestricted. sdsd src="https://www.roostersailingblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/18-04-16_Pegasus__MG_3998-2.jpg"> These items have all been branded with the Team's logo and sail number.
