Optimist League Final Regatta, Marseille

By 2nd October 2020

The weekend of 28/29 May, in Marseille, we sailed the Optimist League Final regatta for the S.E Region of France (known as PACA region). When we arrived in Marseille it was sunny. The weather conditions were super for sailing. There was about 15 knots of wind and lots of waves. We rigged our boats, had a short briefing and then launched them from the slipway. I (Callum) was a bit stressed as I was ranked 2nd overall in the league before the final and I really didn’t want to drop down the rankings, as this was the final regatta of the league for the 2015/16 season. I was over the line in one race on the first day, but otherwise I had an OK day. Iona didn’t have a very good day on the water, but she had fun after the racing finished swimming in the hotel pool. All the Antibes sailors stayed in the same hotel.

On the second day, Iona had better results, but still it wasn’t her best regatta - she did a lot of surfing in the big waves though and enjoyed that. I ended up finishing 5th overall in the regatta, which was just sufficient to ensure that I kept my ranking of 2nd overall for the 2015/16 season in the Benjamin (junior) fleet. I got a medal for the overall result for the season, so still got to go up on the podium!

Happy on the podium at the end of a busy 2015/16 season Happy on the podium at the end of a busy 2015/16 season in PACA region, France

Iona finished 3rd girl overall in the minime (senior) fleet for the 2015/16 season, so she got a medal too and went on the podium. We both came back home happy with our medals.

THANK YOU to ROOSTER for all the GREAT sailing gear that has kept us comfortable on the water throughout the season - warm and dry on cold days (including our Beanie hats, Pro Aquafleece, Hot Socks, Polypro Top), kept the sun off us on hot days (Lycra Top, Visor, Gloves) and of course our Thermaflex Longjohns and Tops that are so versatile all year long. And a special THANK YOU for the hiking pads that make the upwind legs so much better when it's windy.

Next stop : Coupe Internationale d'Ete (CIE) in Brittany in July
