Optimist Christmas Regatta, Pula, Croatia
Last week I went to a regatta in Pula, Croatia. I had a really good time and lots of fun there sailing my Optimist. It was a lot colder than the weather in Southern France but luckily I had packed all my Rooster gear, and with my Polypro top, Thermaxflex top and Longjohns together with my fantastic Pro Aquafleece top, I stayed warm on the water……….another thank you to Rooster. The regatta was held over three days, but our team arrived a day early to do some training. We had very light winds and big waves on the training day. We did some training exercises with the Hungarian team.
For the regatta, we had more wind. The second day we had perfect conditions with 15 knots of wind. There were 350 boats in the optimist fleet, more than last year. The fleets were split, and for each start there were 115 boats so it was good experience as it’s not that often that you get to start with 115 boats. Overall I finished 92nd out of 350. I was quite happy with the result as the level of this regatta was much higher this year than last year with teams from Germany, Hungry, Slovenia, Italy, France, Austria, Serbia, Croatia, Switzerland, Netherlands and Monaco.
Every year I really enjoy this regatta not only because of the sailing but also because all the sailors stay in the same hotel close to the club. At the hotel there is a really good buffet breakfast every morning to eat before going out on the water.
A big thank you to our coach Sylvain and our team leader Didier who organised the trip for the Antibes team. We had a great time!
Iona
