Northampton Grand Prix

By Louis Wright 2nd October 2020

On 16th April I travelled up to Northampton for the Grand prix. When we arrived the conditions looked very patchy and light, this made us a bit anxious as we had not sailed in these conditions much. As we got out on the water we could tell that the day was about spotting the pressure and shifts.

The first race started with about 6 to 10 knots depending on where you were on the course. The first race was very shifty, which meant we struggled to start. We found it hard to read the shifts and spot pressure so we didn't do very well at all. The conditions picked up after the second race, which built up our confidence, but the shifts were still random and Jamie and I found it very difficult to race. On the first day our results consisted of a 34th, 26th, 20th and a 19th.

On the second day the weather was very similar to the Saturday but a bit less wind. We started better and were talking more on the water about pressure, this helped a lot and we got a 15th, which was better, but we were still disappointed with it. We have realized that in future events we need to communicate clearer and make our decisions earlier.
