Kt.'s Xmas and New Year

By 2nd October 2020
Draycote Optimists

Happy New year to the Rooster team and all my sailing friends!!

I had a great time over the Christmas break training and sailing at every chance in my Optimist. Mum and dad are probably regretting getting me a new phone. It’s been really easy to organise meeting up with my mates at Draycote over the holiday. Two 3-day weekends and a couple of days in the middle.

Feva Sailing I had the chance to sail with a top end Feva crew before Christmas. Thank you Lucas and family for lending Lucas and his Feva, wow was it fun, shame his helm arrived after lunch I would have loved to have helmed a 2nd race!

I then teamed up with a family friend, Jack Lewis for 2 pursuit races, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. It was useful crewing for a good helm as it helped me to really understand how the boat should feel when it’s being sailed properly. Our first capsize was really funny. I decided I didn’t want to get my feet wet and stood on the mast and waited. I did not realise Jack and I are very similar in weight. Boat turtled oops… I got wet anyhow!

The second capsize I learned my lesson, we got the boat up and sailing really quickly and hardly lost any distance. Fireball 15056 was the eventual winner of both races – my dad and Jack’s dad teamed up for the first time in 4 years. Well done to Richard Byne and Martyn Lewis. We were 2nd junior boat on New Year’s Day, beaten by Daniel, Jacks brother in a 29er! Unfortunately for mum and dad I’ve got the bug, I sooo want a Feva!

The RYA Dinghy show is coming up fast (5th and 6th March), it's great fun and well worth a visit to catch up with friends. If you are new to the sport, it’s a great chance to get tips and advice, as well as good deals on kit. See you there. Kt.
