King of the Castle (Cove)
Last weekend I headed down to picturesque Castle Cove Sailing Club for the second event in the South Coast Traveller Series. It was also a joint event with the South-West Area, which ensured a good turnout.
The conditions were near perfect; the wind built to around 12 to 15 knots just in time for the start ensuring competitive racing which, along with the great weather and a plentiful supply of homemade cakes meant the balcony sailors were happy.
In the first race I finished second, miss-judging the favoured side of the course on the first beat. After the first race I realised the event was going to be a three horse race between Hugo Burrows, fellow Team Rooster sailor Frances Fox and myself. I managed to win the next race putting me in joint first position which was followed by a third in race three. After a quick bit of mental maths I realised I had to win the last race if I was going to win the event. I had a good start and managed to lead from the start, finishing the extended final race with a 25 second lead.
This was enough to put me on equal points with Hugo to narrowly win on count back – congratulations to Hugo, Frances and all the other sailors for making it such a competitive event.
