Last weekend was the first leg of the Irish optimist trial, held on Lough Derg, North Tipperary. Due to very light winds, it favoured the lighter sailors and didn’t favour the heavier sailors. Sadly I am a heavier sailor. But I had a couple of good races coming 14th
as my best result. The wind was very shifty and was up and down ranging from 2-25 knots of wind. We got the required amount of races, doing about 3 races a day. The race course was a normal trapezoid course. Each race took about 50 minutes to do.
Trapezoid Course for Optimist Trials
They were competitive because all Ireland's best optimist sailors attend it. It was quite hard to sail because your boat sinks 10% more than in fresh water and it was very shifty, there was one race where I was not doing well and next it shifted more than 90 degrees and I was coming 4th
in that race all of a sudden.
I have grown a lot over the winter so it’s time for some new rooster gear.
