Harvey and Bobby's First Blog

By Harvey Martin 30th September 2020
We’re the new Team Rooster members. We became a team after the RS Feva Worlds 2013 (which Bobby won!) as both of our previous partners were moving onto 29ers. We thought we would use this blog to introduce ourselves and give a quick update on what we’ve been busy doing since then…. So after spending just a few weeks getting to know how each other sails and how our new boat performs we headed down to Hayling Island for the first Grand Prix of the season. It was important to do well as this was one of the selectors for RYA National Squad. The regatta was windy and wavy and despite gear failure, which meant we had to retire and use our discard, we managed to battle through the conditions and take 2nd . A good start albeit a bit frustrating. Next up was the Northampton Grand Prix where the conditions could not have been more different – light shifty winds and lots of postponements. No gear failure this time, but we did hit the pin on our first start meaning we had to fight our way back through the fleet. We kept our cool, learnt lots from the experience, and came away with a 3rd overall, which was enough to secure our place on National Squad. The last event of 2013 was the End of Seasons at Datchet where we had high hopes to do well. As we arrived at the event the reservoir was like a mirror. Slowly the wind began to fill in and after a postponement we launched early to get a closer look at the racecourse. The first race began in very light winds with the starboard end favoured. After a good start but a fluky upwind beat we rounded the windward mark down in 7th , not the start we were looking for, but we managed to take 2 places downwind and finished in 5th. Race 2 started in similar conditions but we fought hard to take the lead just before the finish. Day 2 dawned with a more constant breeze and after a dodgy first race result we got back on track and secured a first and 2 seconds. The results were close but we were outsailed by some good tactics from Arthur Brown and Niamh Davis who took the trophy finishing 2 points clear of us in second place. We are now looking forward to the first of our training events in 2014 where we hope to pinpoint and improve on our techniques ready for the racing season ahead. We are at Rutland this coming weekend, where we will be kitted out in our new Rooster SuperTherm®'s so however cold it gets we will be out training hard with our sights set on some podium results in 2014. Harvey and Booby.
