Over the weekend, we took part in our third event of the year which was the Fireball Munster Championships in SE Ireland at Wexford Harbour. Forecast for the weekend was light, shifty in a venue that is very tidal so a tough one ahead!
This was to be our first event in our new boat (15114) collected earlier this month and bar the competition our only other obstacle was getting under the Wexford bridge requiring rescue boat assistance to heel the boat over to get under!
On Sat, race 1 in the new boat came out with a comeback from behind 1st win which was very pleasing but in race 2 we made a few too many errors eventually recovering to 6th. Race 3 we were back on it leading the whole way round to take a commanding win and Race 4 we were in the lead at the first mark which I hit in the process, followed by a few other mistakes that slipped us to 4th by finish.
On the conclusion of Day 1 we were winning after discards with two to go on Sunday but only a point ahead. Race 5 we finished 2nd to our nearest competitor (Noel) making us equal points and set up for a last race decider. We were expecting to be hunted on the startline due to our worst discard score (6th) and we were, but managed to fend him off and get away cleanly only for a general recall. Dial up 2 was much the same only under black flag with Noel this time caught out and getting a BFD. Now with him out of the race we knew we needed a top 3 to win and after a conservative start and a big right hand shift putting us back we were 4th at last mark before the beat to the finish when we managed to take 2 more boats and take 2nd on the line and win overall! Happy days with the new boat a winner on first outing and 3rd win of the year!
