June 2017 Round-up, by Millie Irish

By Rooster Sailing 2nd October 2020

Hi! I'm Millie and I am part of the Midland Optimist Racing Team, aka MORT!

We travel all over the country competing at the big Optimist events but over the last month we have been having heaps of fun closer to home in the Midlands.

I took part in the National School Sailing Association inlands at my home club, Draycote, which was really fun as it was in a handicap fleet so I got to sail with friends who don’t sail an Oppie and because of the challenging conditions. I’ve now fully tested my Rooster kit in a capsize!

Next up was more handicap racing with the Draycote Bank Holiday pursuit race. I won the first pursuit race at Easter and to my amazement managed to win this one too! RS Feva sailors Harrison and Fergus Pye won the pursuit race in between these two, which means the grown-ups at the club haven't won one yet this season!

Then it was on to three days of MORT training at Draycote coached by my dad, Steve, followed by an open at Bowmoor. We must have been paying attention because five of us were in the top 10!

From there we all went on to two events in the Midland Optimist Summer Series. First up was Staunton Harold, which was heavy wind and I was really thrilled to win as it’s a super competitive Midlands fleet. Then we all met up again at Barnt Green open and this time George Eames-Matthews won and I was second on countback. Another close one!

Overall, there's all to play for in the Midlands series because everyone has some really great counting results.

This last month has given me a great opportunity to really put my new Rooster kit to the test across a whole variety of events and conditions – from chilly breezes and cold water swimming ;) to super-hot summer days. It’s the BEST kit I’ve ever had and I’m sure that I’m sailing faster because of it!

Happy sailing! Millie :)
